Quick distinction
Correction addresses the identified issue so operations can continue safely and as intended. Corrective action addresses the cause of a nonconformity to reduce the chance of recurrence.
Both may be needed. Neither replaces auditor judgment, root-cause discipline, or certification-body decisions.
What correction typically means
Examples of correction (illustrative, not mandatory for every finding):
• Contain or segregate nonconforming product/service • Replace a missing record for a specific instance • Stop an unsafe practice immediately • Restore a control that was bypassed
Correction is about the immediate situation. It does not by itself prove the cause is understood.
What corrective action typically means
Corrective action looks beyond the single event:
• Investigate why the nonconformity occurred (proportionate to risk) • Identify contributing causes where appropriate • Plan actions that reduce recurrence risk • Assign ownership and due dates • Verify effectiveness after implementation
Skip cause analysis for every minor issue only when your system and risk criteria allow — document the rationale.
How auditors and owners use the distinction
Auditors look for objective evidence that findings were understood and closed appropriately. Process owners should avoid closing every finding with only a quick fix when recurrence risk remains.
