ISO 9001 for Food and Beverage Organizations

Food and beverage organizations use ISO 9001:2015 to manage quality — specifications, process consistency, complaints, and supplier quality — often alongside a food safety management system such as ISO 22000. Beyond Carbon helps design proportionate QMS programmes. We do not issue certificates.

Practical implementation, documentation, training and audit readiness — without acting as the certification body.

QMS alongside food safety management

Food and beverage organizations use ISO 9001:2015 to manage quality — specifications, process consistency, complaints, and supplier quality — often alongside a food safety management system such as ISO 22000.

Beyond Carbon helps design proportionate QMS programmes. We do not issue certificates.

ISO 9001 vs ISO 22000 vs HACCP

TopicRole
ISO 9001Quality management system
ISO 22000Food safety management system (ISO requirements)
HACCPHazard analysis methodology — not an ISO MS standard

HACCP is not an ISO standard. ISO 9001 does not replace ISO 22000 when customers require FSMS certification. Many plants run both QMS and FSMS with clear interfaces.

Scope for food quality processes

Map product realization from incoming materials through processing and dispatch. Define how QMS interacts with FSMS owners so complaint, change control, and supplier issues do not fall between systems.

Multi-site manufacturing and distribution need honest sampling.

Decision framework

Customer askSensible path
Quality certificate / supplier QMSISO 9001
Food safety certificateISO 22000 (or specified customer scheme)
BothIntegrated planning with discipline-specific evidence
“ISO HACCP” wordingClarify — HACCP ≠ ISO MS certificate

Do not invent GFSI or scheme equivalence claims.

QMS controls that still matter in food plants

  • Specification and change control
  • Process monitoring for quality parameters (distinct from CCP monitoring where FSMS owns CCPs)
  • Complaint and recall interfaces with FSMS
  • Supplier quality performance
  • Internal audits covering quality processes

ISO 9001:2015 remains the published QMS requirements standard, with Amendment 1:2024 (climate action changes). A further revision is under development; confirm status on iso.org before making transition claims.

Roles and interfaces

Quality and food-safety leaders must agree ownership of complaints, changes, and suppliers. Production owns process control. Leadership reviews both quality and food-safety performance inputs.

Common failure modes

  • Treating ISO 9001 as FSMS
  • Calling HACCP an ISO standard
  • Duplicate uncontrolled documents between QMS and FSMS
  • Auditing the office while ignoring production quality checks

Confirm what the customer certificate clause actually names.

Share products, sites, and whether buyers ask for ISO 9001, ISO 22000, or both. We will keep HACCP and ISO roles clear.

Consultancy vs certification

Beyond Carbon provides ISO consultancy, implementation support, documentation assistance, and audit preparation support. Independent certification bodies issue certificates after successful certification audits. Beyond Carbon does not present itself as a certification body or accreditation body.

Industry processes (examples)

  • Traceability & withdrawal readiness

Maintain lot/batch identity to support investigation and withdrawal when needed.

Risks: broken chain of custody, slow recall simulation

Risk themes (educational)

  • Contamination hazards — Food Safety

Inadequate hazard control or monitoring for food safety.

  • Traceability gaps — Food Safety

    Incomplete one-up/one-down traceability.

  • Hygiene control gaps — Food Safety

    Inconsistent PRP/hygiene evidence.

  • Food supplier control gaps — Supply Chain

Weak approved-supplier or incoming verification controls.

  • Recall readiness gaps — Food Safety

    Untested or incomplete recall/withdrawal procedures.
