Role of the certification body
A certification body (CB) is an organization that audits management systems against standards and issues certificates when conformity is demonstrated. It operates under defined procedures for application review, audit planning, audit conduct, certification decisions, surveillance, and sanctions.
The CB must remain independent of the consultancy that implemented your system.
Accreditation of certification bodies
An accreditation body evaluates whether a CB is competent to certify in specific standards and sectors. Accreditation is not the same as the certificate hanging on your wall — your organization is certified; the CB may be accredited.
Buyers often require certificates from accredited CBs. Verify accreditation status through the accreditation body's directory, not only marketing claims.
Certification body vs consultant
Consultants help you design, implement, train, and prepare. Certification bodies assess and certify. Combining both roles in one provider for the same system creates conflicts of interest that accredited systems restrict.
Beyond Carbon is a consultancy. We help you prepare to face an independent CB.
What CBs typically deliver
Quotation and contract. Audit programme. Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits. Nonconformity management. Certification decision and certificate issuance. Surveillance and recertification. Possible scope extensions, reductions, suspensions, or withdrawals.
CBs do not "sell ISO" as a product label detached from audit evidence.

Need help applying this? What to check before choosing a CB
Accreditation for your standard and industry code. Auditor competence language and sector fit. Multi-site capability. Transfer policy. Transparency of fees and expenses. Reputation with your customers' approved lists.
Ask how impartiality is managed and how complaints/appeals work.
Red flags
Guaranteed certification regardless of findings. Certificates issued without audits. Pressure to use the CB's consultancy arm for the same system improperly. Unverifiable accreditation. Prices that ignore mandatory audit time for your headcount and risk profile.
Consultancy vs certification
Beyond Carbon provides ISO consultancy, implementation support, documentation assistance, and audit preparation support. Independent certification bodies issue certificates after successful certification audits. Beyond Carbon does not present itself as a certification body or accreditation body.
Certification roles
