Direct answer
Internal Audit vs External Audit — start here for a plain-language overview of purpose, who typically considers it, and what Beyond Carbon can help with. Details follow below. We provide consultancy and readiness support; certification bodies issue certificates. Do not treat this page as legal advice or a mandatory requirement claim.
Two necessary, different activities
Internal audits are conducted by (or for) the organization to evaluate its own management system. External audits are conducted by outside parties — customers (second-party) or independent certification bodies (third-party).
Internal audits are usually required by ISO management system standards. External certification audits are required only if you seek or maintain certification.
Comparison table
Topic | Internal audit | External audit Party type | First-party | Second-party or third-party Who commissions | Organization's management | Customer or certification body programme Independence | Auditor independent of audited activity | External to the organization Primary purpose | Assurance and improvement for management | Customer assurance or certification decision Output | Internal findings and actions | Customer findings or CB findings/certificate decision Frequency | Per internal audit programme | Per contract or CB cycle (Stage 1/2, surveillance) Can Beyond Carbon perform? | Yes, as outsourced internal/mock audit support | We prepare you for external audits; we do not issue CB certificates
Independence nuances
Internal auditors should not audit their own work. Small organizations may use cross-auditing or external support for internal audits while still treating results as first-party.
External CB auditors follow impartiality rules and cannot consult on the system they certify.
Why strong internal audits reduce external pain
Internal audits that only check document presence miss operational failures. Effective internal audits sample real work, follow trails, and raise honest nonconformities early.
Organizations that fear internal findings often face larger external findings later.
Discuss your audit requirements
Internal audit and preparation support — not certification-body decisions.
Discuss your audit requirementsPreparing differently
For internal audits: schedule access, share criteria, ensure records available, accept findings constructively. For external CB audits: complete internal audit and management review first, close known issues, brief hosts, and manage logistics.
See our audit preparation guide for detailed tactics.
Competence
Internal auditor training builds capability to plan, conduct, and report audits. It does not make someone a certification body auditor. Keep role expectations clear.
Consultancy vs certification
Beyond Carbon provides ISO consultancy, implementation support, documentation assistance, and audit preparation support. Independent certification bodies issue certificates after successful certification audits. Beyond Carbon does not present itself as a certification body or accreditation body.
FAQs
If performed for the organization's management system assurance, it is still a first-party (internal) audit even if outsourced. It is not a third-party certification audit.
No. Certified organizations still need internal audits as part of the management system.
No. This page concerns management system audits, not statutory financial audits.
A simulated external audit used for preparation. Findings are for readiness, not certification decisions.
Run internal audits (and management review) before Stage 2 certification audits.
See /insights/first-party-vs-second-party-vs-third-party-audit.
Yes — see internal auditor training. Training is not certification body qualification unless a separate accredited auditor scheme says so.
An independent certification body performs the certification audit (commonly Stage 1 and Stage 2). Consultants may help you prepare, but they do not issue the certificate. Beyond Carbon provides consultancy and readiness support — not certification decisions.
Consultants help design, implement, and prepare management systems. Certification bodies audit and may issue certificates. Combining both roles without independence controls creates conflicts of interest. Beyond Carbon is a consultancy — we do not issue ISO certificates.
ISO management-system certification is generally voluntary unless a customer contract, tender, regulator, or scheme specifically requires it. Do not assume a Saudi legal mandate without checking the current authoritative requirement for your sector and activity. Beyond Carbon does not invent legal obligations.
There is no single official price. Cost depends on organization size, sites, scope, complexity, industry, chosen certification body, audit duration, consultancy needs, documentation, training, and existing maturity. Use our cost-factor tool for education, then request a tailored proposal — we do not invent fixed SAR fees as “official” prices.
Yes. Shared Annex SL structure makes integrated QHSE practical for governance, document control, internal audit, and management review. Each standard’s discipline-specific requirements must still be addressed — integration reduces duplication; it does not erase OH&S or quality-specific controls.
