ISO/IEC 42001 AI Management — start here for a plain-language overview of purpose, who typically considers it, and what Beyond Carbon can help with. Details follow below. We provide consultancy and readiness support; certification bodies issue certificates. Do not treat this page as legal advice or a mandatory requirement claim.
Quick answer
ISO/IEC 42001 specifies requirements for an artificial intelligence management system (AIMS). Organizations use it to govern AI systems responsibly — establishing policy, assessing risks and impacts, controlling AI lifecycle activities, and continually improving how AI is developed, provided, or used.
Beyond Carbon supports AIMS implementation and certification preparation. Independent certification bodies issue certificates.

What is ISO/IEC 42001?
ISO/IEC 42001 provides a management system framework for organizations that develop, provide, or use AI systems. It emphasizes organizational governance of AI — not a single model-performance test. Leadership direction, risk-based controls, and lifecycle management are central.
It complements information security management; it does not replace ISO/IEC 27001 where security risks dominate.
What it covers
Themes include AI policy and objectives, understanding AI roles (developer, provider, user), risk and impact considerations associated with AI systems, resources and competence, data and system-related controls across the AI lifecycle, supplier and third-party interfaces, monitoring, internal audit, management review, and improvement.
Scope must state which AI systems and organizational roles are included.
Who needs ISO/IEC 42001
Software and SaaS companies embedding AI, enterprises deploying AI in customer or employee processes, and organizations facing buyer assurance questions about AI governance are primary audiences. Public-sector suppliers may see rising expectations for responsible AI management.
Certification is voluntary unless contracts require it. Sector AI rules may apply separately.
Implementation approach
Inventory AI systems and roles, define AIMS scope, establish policy and accountability, assess risks and impacts, implement lifecycle controls (from design and data through deployment and monitoring), manage suppliers, train people, audit, review, and prepare for certification.
Shadow AI and unmanaged vendor models are frequent gaps — bring them into inventory early.
Certification readiness
Auditors look for governed AI inventory, risk/impact processes in use, lifecycle control evidence, supplier oversight, monitoring of AI system performance and issues, internal audits, and management review decisions.
Beyond Carbon prepares the AIMS; we do not certify AI systems or issue ISO/IEC 42001 certificates.
Saudi Arabia context
Saudi digital and AI initiatives increase attention on responsible AI adoption in enterprise and public-interest services. Buyers may ask how AI risks are governed alongside cybersecurity.
Align AIMS scope with real deployments — including Arabic language models and regional cloud arrangements where relevant — and confirm any sector guidance separately.
Cost factors
Number and criticality of AI systems, data sensitivity, supplier complexity, competence building, tooling for monitoring, and certification-body fees influence cost. Organizations with undocumented AI use need discovery work first.
Beyond Carbon scopes AIMS consultancy without fixed public prices.
Consultancy vs certification
Beyond Carbon provides ISO consultancy, implementation support, documentation assistance, and audit preparation support. Independent certification bodies issue certificates after successful certification audits. Beyond Carbon does not present itself as a certification body or accreditation body.

الأسئلة الشائعة
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 per verified notes — confirm on iso.org.
No. We provide consultancy and audit preparation. Certification bodies issue certificates.
No. It can apply to developers, providers, and users of AI systems when scoped accordingly.
They are complementary. Security controls may support AI systems, but AI governance and lifecycle risks need AIMS-specific treatment.
A maintained list of AI systems in scope with ownership, purpose, data dependencies, and operating context — foundational for risk management.
If your organization uses them within scope, yes — manage supplier risk and intended use controls.
No. It demonstrates a managed system for AI. Technical performance and fairness outcomes still require appropriate methods and monitoring.
AI portfolio size, risk criticality, data issues, suppliers, competence, and CB fees.
Yes with a tight scope around the product AI actually used. Avoid paperwork for systems you do not operate.
Do not assume a universal mandate. Check applicable regulations and contracts; seek legal advice for regulatory interpretation.
Incomplete AI inventory, missing risk/impact processes, unmanaged vendors, and no monitoring after deployment.
AI systems depend on data — data-related controls across the lifecycle are typically essential to effective AI management.
An independent certification body performs the certification audit (commonly Stage 1 and Stage 2). Consultants may help you prepare, but they do not issue the certificate. Beyond Carbon provides consultancy and readiness support — not certification decisions.
Consultants help design, implement, and prepare management systems. Certification bodies audit and may issue certificates. Combining both roles without independence controls creates conflicts of interest. Beyond Carbon is a consultancy — we do not issue ISO certificates.
ISO management-system certification is generally voluntary unless a customer contract, tender, regulator, or scheme specifically requires it. Do not assume a Saudi legal mandate without checking the current authoritative requirement for your sector and activity. Beyond Carbon does not invent legal obligations.
There is no single official price. Cost depends on organization size, sites, scope, complexity, industry, chosen certification body, audit duration, consultancy needs, documentation, training, and existing maturity. Use our cost-factor tool for education, then request a tailored proposal — we do not invent fixed SAR fees as “official” prices.
Yes. Shared Annex SL structure makes integrated QHSE practical for governance, document control, internal audit, and management review. Each standard’s discipline-specific requirements must still be addressed — integration reduces duplication; it does not erase OH&S or quality-specific controls.
